How To Take a Before (Never Again) and After Photo

Why Take a Before photo?

Whether you are looking to lose weight, gain weight, build muscle, tone up or just become over all healthier--photos are the best way to measure change! As humans, we like the satisfaction of seeing our hard work pay off (who doesn't?!) and when you are on a physical journey, most of us are looking for a physical change. Sure, the scale will let you know if you lost pounds, but I am here to tell you...THAT DOESN'T TELL THE WHOLE STORY! What if you gained muscle in place of fat loss (totally a possibility). How will you notice the small changes in muscle tone in your arms, legs and abs? When we look and analyze ourselves in the mirror daily, it is really easy to miss some of the changes happening. Also, I think you will be most surprised by the transformation in your face. Your smile and confidence will shine through :)

Think of this as your starting point. Your never again point! Share your photo for added accountability and loads of love and encouragement. Don't want to share your photo with your closest friends? I promise though, that it will be one of the most empowering and bravest things you can do for yourself.  

So how can you take the best before photo possible? Follow these tips!

What do I use?

It is best to use a digital camera, however let's be real--most of us will use our phone :) I use a tiny little phone tripod I purchased on Amazon for $3. However if you have a friend or a loved one you are comfortable with, have them snap your photo! If you choose to use a self-timer allow yourself enough time to get in front of the camera!

How to take it...

First, let's talk about what to wear. You need to wear something that shows those curves! You don't want to hide them and risk masking any amazing changes you will make! You can wear swimwear or even just form fitting clothing like yoga pants and a tight shirt. Then you want to take several photos at different angles

  • A full body shot from the front from the top of your head to at least mid-shin. You can place your arms at your side. Don't suck in, don't push out. Just stand normal!
  • A full body shot from the back. We want to see those back muscles build!
  • From the side. Again, don't suck in your tummy or push it out! Let these be a REAL reflection of where you are right now.
  • Always make sure to smile in your pics ;) 

Where do I take my photo?

Find the most plain spot as possible. Look for a white or light colored wall in your house and avoid any busy backgrounds that will distract from you!

Find the light!

Lighting matters when taking your photo. Look for a room with the most natural light and if possible snap your photos in the morning when the light is the softest and most flattering. You can use any room that is well lit, but make sure you are not taking a photo in a room where you are lit only from the ceiling. It will give you less than flattering light and shadows--try to be lit from the front!

Take your measurements!

In addition to the photo, measurements are important as well. Remember earlier when I said the scale doesn't tell the whole story? I will say it once and a thousand times again! Sometimes, that scale will NOT budge! However, that doesn't mean what you are doing isn't working. Take your measurements so you can see how your body is transforming. Follow the guide in your Beachbody program booklet! My personal measuring preferences are: 

  • arms- at the bicep
  • natural waist- smallest part!
  • belly button
  • hips-this is at the largest part of your booty :)
  • thighs- at the largest part near the top of your leg
  • calf

Banana Oat Waffles

If you follow me over on Instagram (@BrittanyLerbakken) or Facebook, you can see that I have been on a waffle kick. Lucky for me, the meal plan I follow with Hammer and Chisel allows for them. These waffles are incredible and honestly don’t even need any toppings – they are so flavorful all by themselves! I personally have been topping mine with 2 teaspoons of natural peanut butter and serving them alongside two eggs! My husband enjoys adding half a banana. One thing I love about these is that I can make a batch for the whole week and then just pop them in the toaster on my way out the door!

Banana Oat Waffles

Serves 4

Gather Up:

  • 2 cups of rolled oats (gluten free if you prefer!)
  • 1 cup of unsweetened almond milk
  • 1.5 tsp of pure vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 tsp of cinnamon
  • 1 tsp of baking powder
  • 1 packet of stevia

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat waffle maker and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Blend all ingredients in a blender until almost smooth.
  3. Measure out 3/4 cup of batter (or whatever your waffle maker can hold)
  4. Pour batter into waffle maker and cook. I cook mine on the highest setting and then I add 2 extra minutes to the cook time so I get crispy waffles. You will need to test your waffle maker to get the desired crispiness!
  5. Enjoy with fruit or peanut butter!

I had it wrong about Beachbody coaches...

I have debated this post for awhile now, but not sure what has been holding me back. I am writing this because if I had these thoughts, I know others have too. 

So let's back up a bit to 2010 for a super brief moment. I went through some shit at the end of 2009. It's a long story, that produced my life mantra: TRUST YOUR GUT! But I'll tell you the dirty details another day. 2010 was NOT my healthiest year to say the least...but it was maybe one of the most fun ;)

In 2011 I met my future husband (aww) and I was settling down. I started to get really self-conscious about myself. I didn't like my body, and many tears were shed. I had found these beautiful girls named Karena and Katrina and started stalking them and their fitness movement. I loved what they stood for. I loved that their lifestyle was fun, beautiful, crazy, and HEALTHY! You mean...I don't have to be a stick in the mud in social situations to look bangin'? BRING IT ON! So I became a member on cyber Monday of 2012. I still have the hat ;)

For the next 2.5 years I followed them, ate their recipes, attempted bootycalls (yall, I don't wake up easy), and did their workouts (for the most part). FINALLY I felt happy and like I could LIVE a healthy life. Karena and Katrina are my lifestyle inspirations and for that I am truly grateful.  I got so into Tone It Up over those years that when I started seeing Tone It Up girls become Beachbody coaches...I thought they were traitors. There. I said it. I couldn't stand the thought that someone wanted to drink Shakeology over Perfect Fit. Why would you want to work out with Beachbody trainers when K&K were so awesome? I sat back and watched other coaches (ok, judged) for months. Until...that whole feeling in my gut thing happened again.

Damn!

I had been following Anna Maria Locke for a long time. From her TIU Instagram days and through her transition to a coach and when she quit her full time job. I watched from the sidelines. One day I felt this crazy need to ask her what the hell she did for a living. Because secretly to the public, but not so secretly to my husband---I WANTED TO BE Karena and Katrina! (and c'mon--you want to be them too--don't lie. Lol!)  I wanted to be that kind of inspiration and motivation to someone else. I wanted to live a life of hard work and success revolving around my passion of health and fitness. I thought to myself--"maybe this coaching thing is my answer?"

And it is.

Turns out, I loved what the opportunity offered. I have debt and I can earn extra money by being a positive and motivating light to others on their healthy journey. I get to build close relationships with the women I am helping. I still get to post sweaty selfies and food pictures JUST LIKE BEFORE. Although now, I get paid for it.

So are Tone It Up girls turned Beachbody Coaches, like me, traitors? No.

  • I still admire, follow, and support K&K just like before
  • I still purchase Perfect Fit to make pancakes
  • I still lead a Tone It Up lifestyle
  • I still make Tone It Up recipes
  • I still do Tone It Up workouts from time to time (although Beachbody really does fit my schedule better. 30-45 minutes and no bootycalls!!)
  • I also promote Beachbody programs and Shakeology (which is COMPLETELY different from Perfect Fit. Read more about Shakeology here and see why you shouldn't compare the two) because they are what helped ME make the most progress.

I hope that this may have brought some thoughts full circle. Trust me, if you have had a negative thought toward Beachbody I am sure I thought the same thing at first. I wasn't all open arms ;) I would love to answer questions if you have them. I will be an open and honest book!
